Character Essay on the 2 Powers of the Young Wizards series: The Lone Power and the Winged Defender(Also on the Machu Picchu form of the Winged Defender)
When the Universe first came about and some time before, The One created the Powers to bring about its ideas for creation. The Lone Power was “born” first and was given the most power to do his work. He/She(depending on the story) looked at the blue prints but was not satisfied by them. He chose to work alone on his own research projects, while “supervising” the works of the other powers. The second-born Power was the Winged Defender. She/He(depending on the story) decided to follow the One’s blueprints for creation, along with most of the other Powers.
The Powers created space, time, light, land, hills,valleys, rivers, lakes, ponds, people, animals, machines, trees, etc. The Lone Power looked at each of the Bright Powers’ works, eliminating each of the ideas of what hadn’t been invented yet. Many different things contributed to the War in the Heavens. First, the fact the the Lone Power could not make light. Secondly, that some people wanted to give machines intelligence, and various other incidents. The final straw was when the Lone Power presented his creation—Death and the longest death, entropy.
And so the war in heaven was started. And there was much fighting. The Winged Defender took the stand and struck the Lone Power down, casting him out of the heavens until he should learn better.
When the Lone Power was cast out, his major version was given a world of his own to work in. He made a dark city with thousands of creatures, most of which were skewered into destroying life and have the semblance of autonomous programming.
Throughout history, every species has had a version of the Battle of the Heavens called The Choice, usually in smaller scale and often involving the increase or creation of entropy and other forms of death.
The Winged Defender throughout the ages after the Battle in Heaven, often initiated the smaller Choices by inviting species to become knowledgeable and have the powers of Wizardry. This annoys the Lone Power into challenging them because Wizardry is the Power of Life and he hates life. The Winged Defender has been using all these little battles to try to win over her brother again.
After many years and many forms, The Winged Defender came to live with Carl Romeo and Tom Swale in the form of a scarlet macaw named “Machu Picchu”. One day, Nita and Kit witness Nita’s sister Dairine’s initiation into the life of a wizard, called an Ordeal. Her Ordeal is of great significance both in the Heavens and in the many universes, since Dairine of her own will takes the Defender’s role and creates a sentient species of computer wizards that learn that The Lone Power could be different. Machu Picchu travels across space and is struck down in the midst of the battle to even the scales. Shortly afterward, the Lone Power is transfigured and becomes a brilliant contributor to Life and in the Heavens.
However, time has a tendency to make things persist, and so there is still Death in the universe because the Lone One’s forms are not willing to let the changes go smoothly.
