IMPORTANT MOD POST -- PLEASE READ

Hello, everyone.

Today… we’re gonna have a talk about activity and the activity check.

We don’t hide the fact that we’re not really a fast-paced game (or even medium-paced sometimes). We’re definitely on the slower side of things, and due to our 3rd person focus, that’s not very likely to change soon. I don’t even think it’s something most of us want changed; a relaxed pace fits into a lot of our busier schedules, and allows people who normally might not be able to play to play.

However.

Things have been grinding to a halt for a lot of players lately—plots, threads in general, that kind of thing. While, yes, shit happens and we don’t want to punish those whose life is kicking their ass right now, we still have to try and keep things moving, and, to be honest, this seems to be a year-round problem, not just a March and April thing.

But we’re stuck in a bit of a loop: because the game IS slower, people will tend to put off tagging, but because of that we’re also slow. And while some of us try to wait on players who are on hiatus, we also seem to end up stuck in threads for months upon months at a time. Also, I think people tend to get put off once threads slow down for them, making it difficult to keep tagging with all of their other characters. There are probably some other examples you can think of that I’m forgetting, but I think it’s pretty clear that we’ve got issues. Understandable issues, mind, but issues that are neither healthy for the game, nor for you guys having fun.

Now, while we’re aware activity is very much an everyone problem (in other words, the mods have this problem too), we mods are also aware of another. While we’ve done our best to give you guys some tools to come up with things to RP about—the different floors, various things revealed about the city, all that jazz—we can really only do so much without you guys taking the initiative. It’s partly up to you guys to come up with things too (and stick with them if you decide to get things going), and to go out there and get things if you want the plot to move along (for the past three worlds, we’ve been the ones to have to push things along!).

Given our more serious tone, we generally try to avoid the usual “events,” preferring to have a reason for why things are happening beyond “just because.” However, that said, if you DO have an idea, please don’t hesitate to bring it to us, even if it’s of a cracky nature. As long as there’s a reason your character is doing such and such, we’re cool with it. Mods get “plot block” too, after all, and ideas we might be able to run with are always welcome. We can’t guarantee they’ll get used, but we’ll always have an ear open. An RP is a group effort, so it’s very important for us to work together on this kind of thing.

Now let’s get back to hiatuses for a moment. People either aren’t hiatusing when they should, end up not properly informing us in the hiatus post that they’re on hiatus, or end up hiatusing for a long time after just starting a log with someone. A lot of us have been here for awhile and, as we get older, stuff likes to smack us in the faces more than it used to, but we still need to try and work on this.

Emergencies happen. We understand that those are extenuating circumstances, and our position on those will never change. However, if you know or feel a hiatus is necessary soon, please try to finish threads before that time or speak to those you are logging with about how the thread will proceed so they can move on and you can backtag it later. If you have to, summarize it and call it done. Please, do your best not to leave people hanging! If those hiatusing could try to find at least a few minutes to talk to those they are logging with, it could really help people from feeling like they can’t move their character on.

And remember: you can always drop and re-app later on. We’re REALLY not going anywhere, and we allow players to re-app their characters with memories of Paixao intact.

Lastly, Activity Check. The last few have been pretty bad. Please remember to track the activity check tag if you have to, or mark down the 8th to the 15th of every month as AC time.

As for the AC itself, we’ve been considering changing it up—giving some lax in some things, but mostly being stricter. So here’s a quick list of what we have in mind:

Dropping the 1st person Requirement… sort of
Paixao has always been primarily a 3rd person RP. The 1st person requirement came into being due to people seeming to forget the journals existed, which led to some trouble with people getting CR. As this hasn’t been a problem as of late, we’re thinking of getting rid of it. However…

No more “you post, you pass”: If your character doesn’t make the AC, there will be some consequences
But not horrible ones. We’re basically going to do what most other RPs do: if your character doesn’t have activity for that month, the next month they will be required to post third person activity and some first person activity. This first-person activity can be either a journal post or an MB post, but comment threads would have to be at least 5 comments deep. If your character doesn’t use the journals, they will be required to post two instances of 3rd person activity. This can be from two different logs, a narrative and a log tag/start, or even two posts within the same log.

No more “Active, Didn’t Reply”
If you miss the AC, you miss it. We haven’t yet decided on how to handle the misses, but we’re open to any input from you guys.

Not all of this is set in stone. This is a discussion post not a rule change! So let’s talk. What problems are you personally having? Do you have any ideas that you think could help with some of the issues outlined above? Let’s figure out how to help each other and try to fix this problem so the game can stay fun for everyone.
