6. Regardless of your character’s origin and native tongue, the common language used for RP scenes and journal entries will be English. However if your character is ICly fluent in more than one language, and you wish have him/her speak in said language as a way to protect valuable information, then you can do so. You’re also going to have to provide an English translation and put it as an OOC comment at the end the post/comment so that others know what you just said.

If your character was born and raised in a country that didn’t have English as its native language, then they may still use traces of it in their speech, such as honorifics, but only in small amounts. This won’t apply if they simply have voiceovers done in a different language though, as is the case in video games and anime.

It's not just you, so don't worry about it. I was thinking about rewriting that rule for a while now. But yeah, N1 characters aren't really japanese...

That's all I'd actually ever intended and did use (but for baka) until that one incident Ai. Marona has strictly only used honorifics (because I felt I wanted to keep her very polite, and Miss Karst sounded odd), except for that song, cause there isn't an english version. I'd conciously avoided any other words till then since it was just through rp it came up. (It was impossible to resist freaking out at someone's name meaning "Love". Heh.) And there was a lack of communication between Ai and I (that has been fixed since)

I know far far less japanese than most people here. I am the first to admit it, I just have not used the english language for any of the games/anime my characters come from. I think of Laharl and I think of Laharl-sama, and Flonne's Laharl-san!'s and Etna's "Denka!" I enjoy incorperating a little of what feels 'ic" to me into them because it's just how I know the series. I don't want to over do it or use "Kawaii!" fan japanese.

Laharl and co. are over also over 1000 years old. In theory he could know a lot of languages... but it's, of course, only in theory. :/

I'd suggest allowing the honorifics at least to stay for all japanese/japan-based characters.

My current character doesn't mind mostly switching to english and Mister, but if he meets a japanese character he will probably prefer adding the suffix, even though he tends to translate most of everything he says ANYWAY. ^_^/V (I'd personally take it on myself to do an OOC post with all the honorifics and meanings and I bet a few other non-modly figures wouldn't mind helping with that kind of post, as well.)

If I remember, Belle and Subaru made a minor plot point that it was simply astonishing they could understand each other - Belle thought Subaru spoke French, while Subaru heard Japanese when Belle spoke. Should that be the excuse/plot device/whatever that we use from now on?

Hmm, I hadn't actually considered such a case because I thought that nobody would actually focus on actual language differences (Belle being french and Subaru being japanese). However, you do bring up a valid point.

Until an official announcement is made, then that method could be used. Is that alright?

Personally, seeing Japanese honorifics all the time is reallllllllllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy annoying. But if they're a native it's fine. Other than that, I vote nay.

I'd like to make a plea for Japanese catch phrases that have bad English translations. For the characters who can speak Japanese given the context of their character (So, basically, the native borns/livers).

ano, eto, no da... that sort of thing. But I can understand if players would prefer to have it nixed or changed to the English "Uhm," and "aah...".

As long as they're used with moderation (and again, the character is a native or raised in japan), then sure? I only mentioned honorifics because that's the only thing that came to me at the moment.

I like doomweasel's point. After all, we have characters not just from our own various countries (France, Japan, American, etc) but characters from different worlds & universes... who all miraculously understand each other ;)

Personally I've refrained from the use of Japanese honourifics, even though I want to call Tseng Sempai, Rufus Shachou & my nameless Before Crisis sister ne-san. Mainly because most of the other Turks have so far been very US-English that it seemed out of place :p

I think I've always just assumed that this was how things worked, pretty much. It just made sense to me that there was something about Paixao that enabled the characters to understand each other when they spoke different languages.

And for characters of Japanese origin, I've always thought that the honorifics were probably things that got lost in translation. But that doesn't mean that there can't still be the formal tone that a lot of Japanese use with people the respect and don't know. *shrugs*

I think, though, that it might be wise to include something about particular speech habits of characters, like how Deidara of Naruto always says "Un." I know some of them are easy to translate into English, but not all of the speech habits are.

I'm still trying to figure out how come Proxians have huge vocabularies and such a primitive and desolate little village, while the people of Vale (you notice it most with Garet and his folks, but Jenna has her moments) seem linguistically-challenged?

Pretty much the only liberty I've taken with Karst is her discriminating against humans ("Southerners"), was that something I shouldn't have done?

As far as I know, it seems to be IC behavior for her to discriminate against humans. So I'd say you're good.
